The territory of southern Sardinia (7,784 km2), until 2005 a part of the Province of Cagliari, has since been divided between the Province of Cagliari and the new Provinces of Carbonia-Iglesias and the Medio Campidano. Following this re-organisation, 13 Municipalities of the Province of Nuoro have been included in that of Cagliari, enriching it by the addition of the southernmost of the Barbagias of Nuoro.
Southern Sardinia is known world-over for the beauties of its 525 km long coastline, but each of its 122 Municipalities (26 of which lie along the coast) offers a natural, archaeological, cultural and food and wine heritage of exceptional variety and richness.
The Province of the Sun is the perfect name for the three Provinces of Southern Sardinia, sun-kissed for the better part of the year, looking out over the Mediterranean, set between Europe and Africa. From Africa come the pink flamingos which nest in the 11 wetlands of the area and the warm winds which, in some years, draw intrepid bathers to the beaches in January and make the whole island blossom early.
From February to June, Sardinia is in flower, from mountains to beaches, and the symbol of this is the ramadura, the carpet of many-hued flowers scattered along the streets of Cagliari in honour of Sant'Efisio, the patron saint of Sardinia, during the great popular celebration of 1 May.
Welcome to the 122 Municipalities of Southern Sardinia - enjoy your trip through the Province of the Sun.
